Pitt bought the house that sits on a cliff-side perch high above the ocean in an off-market purchase that is said to be one of the priciest sales in one of the most sought-after locations in the country.

It reflects a second 695-square-foot structure built in 1940 consisting of one bedroom and one bathroom. Other attributes on the county document list a total of five fireplaces, a 550-square-foot greenhouse, a 504-square-foot garage, and a 588-square-foot basement.

In 2001, Ritchie received an OK from the Monterey County Planning Commission to drill and blast an access tunnel through the cliff under the house to the rocky beach below, but the California Coastal Commission appealed that decision.

Pitt bought a French Quarter mansion in New Orleans in 2006 for $3.5 million which he sold in 2016 for $4.9 million, and a mid-century modern Malibu beach house he acquired in 2005, remodeled and sold in 2011 for $12 million, among other properties.

The CSUMB Employee Housing, Inc. (CEHI) program was created in 1998 as the first of its kind in the California State University system. University employees may purchase a CEHI home on a ground sublease basis at a very affordable price. Monthly costs compare favorably to market rate rental payments. The program offers eight spacious floor plans featuring from two to five bedrooms in detached and townhouse arrangements. Each includes an attractively fenced private yard.

In a typical home sale the buyer purchases both the land and the home on it. The CEHI home sales program differs from this in that the homebuyer purchases only the house itself, while the CSU/State of California retains ownership of the land and leases the right to use the land to the homeowner. . .

On November 24, 1818, Argentine corsair Hippolyte Bouchard landed 7 km (4.3 mi) away from the Presidio of Monterey in a hidden creek. The fort's resistance proved ineffective, and after an hour of combat the Argentine flag flew over it.[25] The Argentines took the city for six days, during which time they stole the cattle and burned the fort, the artillery headquarters, the governor's residence and the Spanish houses. The town's residents were unharmed.[26]

In addition, many historic "firsts" occurred in Monterey. These include California's first theater, brick house, publicly funded school, public building, public library, and printing press (which printed The Californian, California's first newspaper.) Larkin House,[28] one of Monterey State Historic Park's National Historic Landmarks, built in the Mexican period by Thomas Oliver Larkin, is an early example of Monterey Colonial architecture. The Old Custom House,[29] the historic district and the Royal Presidio Chapel are also National Historic Landmarks.[30] The Cooper-Molera Adobe is a National Trust Historic Site.[31]

Monterey hosted California's first constitutional convention in 1849, which composed the documents necessary to apply to the United States for statehood. Today it houses a small museum, while adjacent buildings serve as the seat of local government, and the Monterey post office (opened in 1849).[15] Monterey was incorporated in 1890.[15] 041b061a72
