How to Use Interactive Heat Transfer Software 4.0 for Solving Heat and Mass Transfer Problems

How to Use Interactive Heat Transfer Software 4.0 for Solving Heat and Mass Transfer Problems

Interactive Heat Transfer (IHT) software is a powerful tool that allows students and instructors to solve a variety of heat and mass transfer problems using a graphical user interface. The software is based on the textbook Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer by Incropera et al. [^1^] and covers topics such as conduction, convection, radiation, phase change, heat exchangers, and more.

In this article, we will show you how to install and use IHT software 4.0 for solving heat and mass transfer problems. We will also provide some examples of problems that can be solved using the software and compare the results with the solutions given in the textbook [^2^].

Installing IHT Software 4.0

To install IHT software 4.0, you will need a Windows-based computer with WinZip or equivalent software. You can download the software from the Wiley website [^1^] or use the CD-ROM that comes with the textbook. Follow these steps to install the software:

  • Extract the zip file to a folder on your computer.

  • Open the folder and double-click on setup.exe.

  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

  • A shortcut to IHT software 4.0 will be created on your desktop.

Using IHT Software 4.0

To use IHT software 4.0, double-click on the shortcut on your desktop or go to Start > Programs > Interactive Heat Transfer 4.0. You will see a window like this:

The main window consists of four tabs: Problem Statement, Solution Method, Results, and Graphs. You can switch between these tabs by clicking on them.

Problem Statement

In this tab, you can select the type of problem you want to solve from a list of predefined categories and subcategories. For example, if you want to solve a conduction problem with steady one-dimensional heat transfer in a plane wall, you can select Conduction > Steady One-Dimensional Heat Transfer > Plane Wall from the list.

After selecting the problem type, you can enter the problem data such as material properties, boundary conditions, dimensions, etc. in the corresponding fields. You can also change the units of measurement by clicking on the Units button at the bottom of the window.

Solution Method

In this tab, you can choose the method of solution for your problem from a list of available options. For example, if you want to solve a conduction problem with steady one-dimensional heat transfer in a plane wall using analytical solution, you can select Analytical Solution from the list.

After selecting the solution method, you can click on the Solve button at the bottom of the window to obtain the results. You can also click on the Check button to verify if your problem data are consistent and valid.

Results

In this tab, you can view the results of your problem such as temperature distribution, heat flux, heat rate, etc. in a table format. You can also export the results to a text file by clicking on the Export button at the bottom of the window.

Graphs

In this tab, you can view the results of your problem in a graphical format such as temperature profile, heat flux profile, etc. You can also customize the graphs by changing the axes labels, scales, colors, etc. by clicking on the Graph Options button at the bottom of the window.

Examples of Problems Solved Using IHT Software 4.0

To illustrate how to use IHT software 4.0 for solving heat and mass transfer problems, we will provide some examples of problems taken from the textbook [^2^] and show how to solve them using the software.
