How to Program Your Motorola GM950 Plus Radio on Windows 10

If you have a Motorola GM950 Plus radio and want to program it on your Windows 10 computer, you might find it challenging to find the right software and cable. However, with some patience and creativity, you can achieve this task using Dosbox and Windows 3.1. In this article, we will show you how to set up the software environment, connect the cable, and program your radio.

Setting Up the Software Environment

The first thing you need to do is to find a copy of the Motorola RSS programming software for the GM950 Plus. This software is old and hard to find, so be careful of malware and viruses. You can try searching online or asking other radio enthusiasts for a copy.

Next, you need to install Dosbox, which is a program that emulates an old DOS computer. You can download it from here. After installing Dosbox, you need to locate its configuration file and make some changes to it. The file is usually located in C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\DOSBox\dosbox-0.74.conf.

In the configuration file, you need to change the following sections:

In the [cpu] section, change the core, cputype, cycles, cycleup, and cycledown values to match these settings:

core=normal

cputype=pentium_slow

cycles=fixed 2500

cycleup=10

cycledown=20

In the [serial] section, change the serial1 value to match your COM port number. If you are using COM1, use this setting:

serial1=directserial realport:COM1 rxdelay:100

Leave the other serial values as they are.

Save and close the configuration file.

The last thing you need to do is to install Windows 3.1 or 3.11 on Dosbox. This is because the Motorola RSS software only runs on Windows 3.x. You can either install Windows 3.x yourself using this guide, or use a pre-made Windows 3.x pack that you can drop into your Dosbox folder. You can find such packs on various abandonware websites.

Connecting the Cable

Now that you have the software environment ready, you need to connect your radio to your computer using a cable. The cable you need is a Motorola RIB (Radio Interface Box) cable that has a USB connector on one end and a RJ45 connector on the other end. You can either make your own cable using this schematic, or buy one online from Amazon, AliExpress, or eBay. One example of such a cable is the MaxtonData RPC-MM-U cable.

Once you have the cable, plug it into your computer's USB port and your radio's RJ45 port. Then go to the Windows Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager and locate the COM & LPT entry. Double click on the device and change its COM Port Number to COM1 (or whatever port number you used in the Dosbox config). Also make sure that the FIFO buffer is off. Click OK and you are done with the cable config.

Programming Your Radio

The final step is to program your radio using the Motorola RSS software. To do this, follow these steps:

Launch Dosbox and run Windows 3.x.

Copy the Motorola RSS software folder to your C:\ drive in Dosbox.

Navigate to the Motorola RSS software folder and run GM950.EXE.

Select your radio model (GM950 Plus) and frequency band (VHF or UHF).

Select 248dff8e21
